White on White
White on white is often a hard design concept to achieve without feeling overly modern. In a colonial home, bridging the gap was key to a successful renovation that stands the test of time.
THE PLAN
We removed all reminders of the previous angles. With a modern-traditional aesthetic, cleaning up the lines and creating linear shapes throughout supported the desired feel for the design, and created a more functional floor area.
THE BEFORE
A previously dark and dated ensuite bathroom from the 80’s was ready for an aesthetic update, as well as a functional one. A corner tub, enclosed shower stall and his and hers sinks left the floor area feeling cramped and where there wasn’t enough storage in the two small drawer banks – there was an open makeup area that had rarely, if ever, been used.
THE ENSUITE
Light, bright, clean and simple was the directive for the space, with the added challenge of achieving this without being too modern in a colonial home. We paired back the elements using simple shaker style cabinetry in white, large scale marble-look tiles, custom glass shower and linear layout.
The linear line integrates nicely into the soaker tub with custom shaker style apron and white quartz surround.
Reducing the large corner tub to a linear soaker opened up floor area and allowed a much larger custom glass shower to be installed.
Framing a full-height wall beside the toilet keeps it tucked out of view so it doesn’t interfere with the sight lines to the vanity, tub and shower.
STORAGE
Storage in the ensuite was key. The vanity design was carefully considered for elements of balance and symmetry in relation to the custom recessed medicine cabinets and lighting while supporting the need for additional functional storage.
The lighting, tiles and bathroom fixtures were selected to provide an element of drama in the space bringing the white palette to life.
The homeowners wanted a space that was bright, clean and simple – without being too modern. In addition, the longevity of the design style was important.. The white and grey palette and shaker cabinets are classic design elements that have been around for generations – and aren’t going anywhere fast.
Light, bright, clean and calming was the directive for the space and we did it!
