Suburban Dream

A 20-year-old colonial style home has the ability to lean in a more contemporary direction – but the design needs to be thoughtful of the bones of the home.  More traditional elements and décor are important to incorporate or the space will feel lost from its origins. This was the consideration for the overall design of the home; from the kitchen to the dining room and into the family room.

THE PLAN

When you start with the renovation of a whole home, you often start with the key “pain” area and work back from there.  In this case, we started with the ensuite and created a beautiful white on white palette that inspired the rest of the design.

THE PLAN

A 20-year-old colonial style home has the ability to lean in a more contemporary direction – but the design needs to be thoughtful of the bones of the home.  More traditional elements and décor are important to incorporate or the space will feel lost from its origins. This was the consideration for the overall design of the home; from the kitchen to the dining room and into the family room.

ARTium Floor Plan

THE BEFORE

The largest challenge in the existing home was the all-to-common sunken living room off of the kitchen area.  It included traditional columns and divided the two spaces making it hard to arrange furniture within the tight constraints of the sunken footprint.  We opted to raise the sunken area and remove the structural posts by installing a new steel beam.

From Dreams to Reality

Throughout the home the palette was lightened on the walls to a warm grey and the flooring was darkened – each adding a classic-contemporary spin on a traditional home.

Stairs & Dining

Consistency from space to space is what ties this whole home renovation together, and the result is classic and clean with a beautifully traditional twist.

With the reorientation of the fireplace, the result is a space that has more functional seating and more flexibility. The change was much more dramatic than expected and the atmosphere and flow of the space changed significantly.

THE FINALE

In the kitchen, we repeated elements from the ensuite bathroom sticking with a white on white palette and classic shaker style cabinets.  A previous angled lower cabinet became part of a full-height panty and fridge wall and allowed us to create a quaint coffee station / butler pantry between the kitchen and dining room.
