Serenity Now
Faced with a space that architecturally "had potential" but hadn't quite hit the mark,
we were excited to explore this renovation and find a way to truly make it sing.
THE CONCEPT
Vaulted ceilings throughout created amazing shapes and shadows throughout the space, but strong colonial detailing was competing with the style. We stripped it all away - oak colonial railings, pillars and archways and let the soaring ceilings become the focal point of this home.
THE PLAN
The kitchen renovation was inspired by simple European designs and the desire for the overall home to be a serene oasis to come home to. We achieved this by eliminating adornment in for the form of cabinet hardware and door profiles, and by emphasizing the linear quality of the cabinetry with full depth upper cabinets and recessed cabinets above the range top.
THE BEFORE
The basic layout was our palette and the windows and light were great. What was missing was storage and a modern vision.
THE DESIGN
Light wood cabinetry details add interest and warmth, and the white cabinetry mixed with light countertops emphasize the airy quality of the home.
LIGHTING IN DESIGN
Lighting is such an key part of our projects. Not only can lighting set the mood of an entire room, it can also become a key focal point or art in a space.
THE FINISHED SPACE
High ceilings create the benefit of a bright and spacious home, however, they also pose the challenge of competing with our "human scale." We purposely kept the pantry wall from climbing the full height of the vault to create a lower visual line that feels familiar to our bodies. We reinforced this by hanging pendants at the island to "lower" the height and create a sense of intimacy - even when the space is large and open.
THE HOME
This was a whole home renovation, we redesigned most of the home from the front entrance, the kitchen, ensuite and the full basement. This allowed our team to carry the serene and modern feel throughout the entire home.
THE FINISH
A unique wood detail at the island creates repetition with the stove wall and once again, creates a linear horizontal line in the space.
